Where the glitch aesthetic comes from
Real glitches happen when image data is corrupted or misread: a dropped byte in a JPEG shifts everything after it, a failing cable desynchronises the colour channels on a display, a video codec applies motion data to the wrong frame. The visual signatures are distinctive, red and cyan fringes pulling away from edges, horizontal bands sliding out of alignment, blocks of pixels repeating where they should not.
This tool reproduces those signatures deliberately. Channel shifting moves the red, green and blue layers independently, which is what produces the chromatic-aberration fringing that reads instantly as broken-screen. Scanline displacement slides horizontal strips sideways by varying amounts, imitating a corrupted scan order or a failing analogue signal. Block corruption repeats and offsets regions the way a damaged compressed file does.
The effect became an aesthetic in its own right through vaporwave, cyberpunk design and experimental music artwork, where the visual language of technological failure signals something about the subject. It shows up on album covers, event posters, streaming overlays, social graphics and title sequences, usually where the point is to look deliberately unstable.
Because the distortion is randomised on each run, the same photo produces a different result every time. That is the intended way to use it: click repeatedly and keep the one that lands rather than trying to dial in a specific outcome. Reset returns you to the untouched original whenever a run goes too far.
How to make glitch art
- Upload a photo. Portraits, buildings and images with strong edges glitch most legibly, since channel shifting needs defined boundaries to fringe against.
- Apply the glitch. Each click randomises a fresh set of channel offsets and displacements.
- Keep clicking. Results vary considerably run to run. Most people land on something they like within a handful of attempts.
- Reset if it goes too far. That restores the original so you can start again.
- Download at full resolution. Save as PNG to keep the hard channel edges crisp.
