How do I read an image histogram?

The horizontal axis runs from pure black on the left to pure white on the right, and the height of the graph at each point is how many pixels carry that brightness. A hump on the left means the picture is dominated by dark tones, a hump on the right by bright ones, and a broad spread across the middle means plenty of midtone detail. There is no single "correct" shape — a night scene should lean left and a snow scene right. Read the RGB channels the same way: if one channel sits noticeably to one side of the others, the image has a colour cast in that direction.

How do I check if a photo is over- or under-exposed?

Look at the two ends of the graph. A tall spike pressed against the right wall means highlights are clipped to pure white and that detail is gone — the photo is overexposed. A spike jammed against the left wall means shadows are crushed to pure black, so it is underexposed. A well-exposed image usually touches both ends without piling up against either. Load your photo above and watch the luminance curve: if you see that wall-hugging spike, reshoot with exposure compensation rather than trying to recover it afterwards.
