The nuances that actually catch people

"Send as file" defeats the whole system

WhatsApp and Telegram both strip metadata as a side effect of compression. Choose the document or file option — the one people reach for precisely because they want to preserve quality — and there is no compression, so there is no stripping. The recipient gets your original file with GPS coordinates, camera model, lens, serial numbers and timestamps intact. Neither app warns you. Stripped for users, received by the company

On Meta's platforms the file your followers can download is clean, but the file you uploaded arrived at Meta complete. Meta's data policy allows it to collect metadata from uploaded content, and location signals feed advertising and recommendation systems. Email and cloud links are not social media, and behave nothing like it

People carefully consider what they post publicly and then email the same photo to a contractor, a landlord, or a buyer. Email attachments are transferred unmodified. So are Google Drive, Dropbox and iCloud share links — the person on the other end downloads your original file. These are the most metadata-leaky sharing channels most people use daily, and they get almost none of the scrutiny that Instagram does.

Marketplace listings leak twice

A Marketplace photo has its EXIF stripped from the listing, so the GPS coordinate is gone. The driveway, the house number, the recognisable street corner and the neighbour's car are all still in the frame — and you have publicly attached them to your name, an approximate location, and a signal that you own something worth collecting.

Stripping is not enough in 2026

Metadata removal used to be roughly sufficient. It no longer is. Commercial AI geolocation systems now infer where a photo was taken from the pixels alone — architecture, vegetation, road markings, signage, soil, utility poles, the particular way a kerb is cut. Tools built for investigators and open-source-intelligence work claim street-level accuracy in urban scenes from images carrying no metadata at all, and free tiers put that capability in anyone's hands.

The practical consequence: EXIF stripping removes the machine-readable location, which is the precise and effortless one. It does nothing about the visually inferable location. Both matter, and only one of them can be fixed with a tool. Strip the metadata as a baseline, then look at the photograph itself and ask what it shows: house numbers, distinctive storefronts, school uniforms, licence plates, mail on a counter, a view from a window that is unique to one building.

Necessary but not sufficient is the right way to hold this. Removing metadata is cheap, takes seconds, and closes the easiest attack. Not removing it means you are relying on a platform's compression pipeline — a pipeline built to save bandwidth, not to protect you, and one that can change any time without telling you.

What to do

  1. Strip before you share, not after. Clean the file on your own device and the platform's behaviour stops mattering.
  2. Treat file-mode sends as unprotected. If you use "send as document" or "send as file", assume full metadata goes with it.
  3. Apply the same rule to email and cloud links. These never strip anything.
  4. Turn off camera geotagging for everyday photos, so there is nothing to strip in the first place.
  5. Read the picture, not just the header. Ask what the frame reveals independently of any metadata.
