Does WhatsApp Remove EXIF Data?
Usually yes — with one exception that undoes everything. A photo sent the normal way is compressed and re-encoded, and the EXIF block including GPS coordinates does not survive that. But if you attach the same image with "Send as Document" or "File", WhatsApp transmits your original file untouched: GPS latitude and longitude, capture time, device model, lens, everything. There is no warning, no indicator, and no difference in how the message looks to you.

The normal send path
When you tap the attachment icon and choose Photos, or use the in-chat camera, WhatsApp compresses the image before transmitting it. This is a bandwidth decision — WhatsApp moves enormous volumes of media and shrinking every photo saves a great deal of it. The compression re-encodes the pixel data into a new JPEG, and the new file is written without the original EXIF block.
The privacy benefit is real but incidental. Nobody designed this to protect your location; it is a side effect of a delivery optimisation, and a side effect can change whenever the optimisation does. As of this writing, recipients of a normal photo send will generally find no GPS coordinates in the file.
End-to-end encryption is a genuine advantage here compared with a social platform: the media is encrypted in transit, so WhatsApp does not hold a readable copy of your original the way Meta does when you post to Instagram. The risk on WhatsApp is not the platform reading your metadata — it is the person on the other end of the chat receiving it.
The document-send trap
This is the headline fact, and it is the reason this article exists.
Choose the attachment menu and select Document (Android) or Document / Choose File (iOS), pick the same photo, and WhatsApp does something completely different: it treats the image as an arbitrary file and sends it byte for byte. No compression. No re-encoding. And therefore no stripping. The recipient downloads your original camera file with its EXIF block fully intact — GPS latitude and longitude to several decimal places, altitude, the exact capture timestamp, the phone make and model, lens information, software version, and any IPTC or XMP fields the file carried.
The cruel part is why people use it. Send-as-document is the well-known workaround for WhatsApp's aggressive compression — anyone who has complained that "WhatsApp ruins my photos" has been told to use it. It is recommended precisely because it preserves the original file, and preserving the original file is exactly what preserves the metadata. The feature works as intended; the privacy consequence is simply not mentioned anywhere in the interface.
Practically: if you have ever sent a home photo as a document to a contractor, a landlord, a marketplace buyer or a stranger in a group chat, they received a file naming the coordinates where it was taken. Extracting them requires no skill — any free EXIF viewer, including this one, shows them on a map in one step.
HD quality sends
WhatsApp's HD toggle, which appears in the editor when you attach a photo, sends a higher-resolution and less-compressed version than the standard path. Its metadata behaviour is not documented by WhatsApp, and independent testing has reported metadata surviving HD sends in a meaningful share of cases rather than never — an unpredictable middle ground rather than a safe one.
Because the behaviour is undocumented and could change with any client update, the correct posture as of this writing is to treat HD sends as possibly metadata-carrying. If the photo is sensitive and you want the quality, strip the file yourself first — then HD is entirely safe, because there is nothing left to leak.
Group chats and forwarding
Metadata travels with the file, and files travel further than you expect. Two consequences follow.
Group chats multiply the audience. A document-mode photo sent to a 200-person community group has been delivered, complete with your home coordinates, to 200 devices — most belonging to people you have never met, several of which back up WhatsApp media automatically to a cloud account you do not control.
Forwarding preserves whatever was there. When a recipient forwards a message, WhatsApp passes along the media it already holds. A document-mode image that entered the network with full EXIF keeps that EXIF as it is forwarded onward, indefinitely, through chats you cannot see. You get exactly one chance to control the metadata in a file, and it is before you press send the first time.
What to do
- Strip metadata before sending, always. This is the only step that makes the send mode irrelevant — a clean file cannot leak what it does not contain.
- Treat "Send as Document" as an unprotected channel. If you need it for quality, sanitise the file first. Never use it for photos taken anywhere you would not publish an address.
- Turn off camera geotagging so there is nothing to strip. iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never. Android: the camera app's own location toggle.
- Assume forwarding. Send to a group as if the file will reach people outside it, because it often will.
- Remember the picture itself. Stripping EXIF removes the machine-readable location; house numbers, driveways and recognisable views in the frame remain, and AI geolocation tools now read those directly from the pixels.
