How filling in a removed object works

Removing something from a photograph is really a reconstruction problem. Once the object is gone there is a hole, and something has to go in it. Inpainting solves this by looking at the pixels immediately surrounding the area you painted and extending their colour, texture and gradient inward until the gap is closed.

That approach explains exactly which removals look seamless. A bin against a plain wall, a stray tourist on an empty beach, a power line across open sky, a logo on a flat surface, a blemish on skin, a date stamp in the corner: in each case the surrounding area is uniform or smoothly graded, so extending it inward produces something indistinguishable from the real thing. Sky, grass, sand, water, walls and blurred backgrounds are the ideal cases.

The technique rewards a bit of technique on your part. Work in several small strokes rather than one large selection, since each pass has less area to reconstruct and more surrounding context to draw from. Paint slightly beyond the object's edge so no fringe of it survives to give the removal away. And when an object sits across two different backgrounds, treat each side as its own stroke rather than covering both at once.

How to remove an object from a photo

Which removals look most seamless?
